Taste the Holidays

The holiday season is more than just a busy time on the calendar; it’s a period when dining out feels special. Guests aren’t simply looking for a meal; they’re craving an experience full of warmth, nostalgia, and perhaps a bit of indulgence. They typically feel that with the holiday dishes that are served. Your holiday menu is the centerpiece of that experience, and how you present it can significantly influence guest excitement and sales.

With the right mix of strategy and creativity, you can turn your seasonal offerings into a must-try event that keeps your tables full and your guests talking. When a new season arrives, guests get excited about what may be offered at dining establishments. They know different flavors will be used, and it is a chance to have something different than what they are used to.

1. Start Early & Tease the Menu

The anticipation of a new menu can be as powerful as the menu itself. Start planting the seed weeks before your official launch to give guests something to look forward to.

Tease new items on your social media channels using just enough detail to spark curiosity. Share a close-up of a steaming bowl of soup without revealing the full recipe, or a short video clip of your chef sprinkling cinnamon over a decadent dessert. Caption it with a playful “Coming soon…” or “Holiday flavors are on their way.”

Email marketing can also work in your favor here. Send a “save the date” message to your subscriber list announcing when the menu will be available. Loyal guests will appreciate the heads-up, and you’ll give them a reason to start planning their visit. If your establishment is more into sending texts, then be sure to send one of those. Those simple reminders give guests a little nudge to get out and try the new dishes on the fall menu.

2. Make It Visual

A great photo can do more for your holiday menu than a paragraph of description ever could. People love visuals, and when it comes to food, seeing truly is so helpful. Many diners enjoy looking at meals before they go or even order just to see what the meal will come out like.

Invest in high-quality photography that captures the colors, textures, and overall feeling of your dishes. For the holidays, lean into warm tones, soft lighting, and seasonal elements like pine sprigs, cinnamon sticks, or rustic wood tabletops. Even a casual handheld video can feel festive if the lighting is cozy and the plating is inviting.

Don’t limit visuals to your menu launch post, create a series. Feature one new item each week in the lead-up to your launch, or post short, engaging reels showing the cooking process. If you serve beverages, make sure to capture the steam rising from a mug or the sparkle of a holiday cocktail in dim light. Have fun with it, and it will catch your viewers’ eye.

3. Train Your Staff as Brand Ambassadors

Your staff is your most valuable marketing tool for building excitement. A server’s genuine enthusiasm about a new dish can be the reason a guest decides to order it.

Before launching the holiday menu, hold a tasting for your front-of-house team. Let them try every new dish and drink so they can describe them with personal flair. Encourage them to share their own favorites with guests, as it goes a long way toward making guests curious.

Equipping your team with strong talking points is also essential. Provide brief descriptions, key flavor notes, and any interesting ingredient stories so they can confidently answer questions. When staff are excited, guests feel it too. Often, guests will ask the server for their opinion, so when your staff has tried the dishes, they can better help their tables as well.

4. Offer Exclusive Previews

People love to feel like insiders. Offering a sneak peek of your holiday menu before the official launch can create a sense of privilege and urgency.

You might invite loyalty program members or your most frequent guests for a one-night-only tasting event. Alternatively, consider a “soft launch” weekend where the menu is available in limited quantities, adding a natural scarcity that makes guests eager to try it before it’s gone.

These exclusive previews also serve as a great source of organic marketing. Guests who receive early access are more likely to share their experience on social media, providing you with free word-of-mouth promotion before the menu is even fully available.

Enjoy the Season

A successful holiday menu launch is about more than the food itself; it’s about building an atmosphere of excitement and anticipation that draws guests in. By starting early, leveraging visuals, engaging your staff, and offering select previews, you can turn your seasonal offerings into a celebrated tradition that guests look forward to year after year.

When you make the menu rollout part of the holiday experience, you’re not just serving food, you’re serving memories.
